The Siege of Jadotville (2016)

IMDB Rating 7.3

Shot in an almost documentary style this movie tells the little known story of an Irish peace keeping force sent in to the Congo in 1961 during a civil war. The Irish force was supposed to protect the miners in Jadotville.

We see the colonial powers scrambling as a new leader is elected in the Congo, and he is going to kick out some of the foreign interests. When he is assassinated the new leader allies himself with France and Belgium, and their colonial interests, and against his own people.

The Irish hold of the Katangese troops loyal to the new minister and their Belgian and French mercenaries for six days. The Irish troops finally had to surrender because of a lack of supplies and no relief.

The Irish were held as prisoners for a month and then released, but they were not recognized as the heroes they were until decades later, because of the International situation.

Very well done.
