Set in 1950's Ireland this is the story of Bernadette "Benny" Hogan (Minnie Driver) and her best friend, Eve Malone. The girls are entering University College in Dublin and on their first day there they run in to their childhood friend, the striking Nan Mahon. One of Nan's friends is Jack Foley (Chris O'Donnell). The girls go to see Jack play rugby.
Benny goes out with Sean Walsh who works at her father's shop but she doesn't like him, she likes Jack. Jack asks her to a dance , but he also asked a whole group of girls. At the dance he dances with everyone, but finally at the end comes to Benny saying he saved the best for last.
Benny and Jack start hanging around and before you know it they get romantic. Nan is going out with a rich older married fellow, Simon Westward (Colin Wirth). When Benny's father dies bennt works at the family shop, but Sean Walsh is working there too, and he won't give up on winning Benny.
When Nan gets pregnant Simon wants her to have an abortion. He told her he loved her, but he would never leave his wife who has the money. Nan says she is a Catholic, she can't kill her baby. Then Nan grabs a drinking Jack and seduces him. Then a while later, believe it or not, Nan tells Jack that she is pregnant.
Jack has to give Benny the bad news. He tells Benny that the "Baby's mine. We're getting married" and Benny runs off. She blames herself for not sleeping with Jack. Eve figured out what happened and confronts Nan but Nan gets hurt and Benny doesn't find out.
Sean tries to force himself on Benny and she wacks him. Then she finds out he has been stealing from the company. Jack found out what happened and sees Nan off on a boat trip. Jack heads back to see Benny. He tells Benny that he loves her and wants to marry her. And i guess they lived happily ever after.
A nice little romantic drama.
